Heavy rains halt second-round play, could help golfers on Saturday

ST. LOUIS – If players thought Bellerive Country Club’s greens were receptive before, wait until Saturday morning.

Heavy rains suspended second-round play at the PGA Championship beginning at 3:53 local time Friday. Initially, the storm cell appeared to be small and many expected play to resume at some point Friday evening. But soon, the radar lit up and a downpour ensued at Bellerive.

Play was officially called at 5:33 p.m. and is scheduled to resume Saturday at 7 a.m. Third round will begin approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of Round 2 with players going off split tees and threesomes.

For a course that received more than an inch of rain on Tuesday, Bellerive figures to be even kinder to ballstrikers this weekend. The soft bentgrass greens have allowed players to attack hole locations, their balls ending up near where they land and leaving big ball marks.

Target golf, as Rory McIlroy called it.

On Friday, nothing worse than par was made at the 132-yard par-3 third hole. Seventy-one pars were recorded and 55 birdies were carded. Also, Brooks Koepka and Charl Schwartzel each shot 7-under 63s to tie the PGA Championship scoring record.

The forecasts for Saturday and Sunday are much better with each day calling for a 10-percent chance of rain. Still, the sunshine doesn’t figure to firm Bellerive up much.

Fire away, boys.
